Dis-assembly is the most important and critical element in the restoration process of the Porsche body.
Everything is taken off or out of the metal body. Each removed part is categorized, inventoried and assessed for condition and suitability to be reused on your revitalized Porsche project.
Once taken down to the body shell the paint and undercoat is removed revealing the bare metal Porsche unibody. All the previous repairs and paint, are stripped away so we can identify any and all problem areas.
The bare metal is immediately covered with Epoxy Primer or E-Coat to prevent any metal contamination and rust. Bare Metal begins “rusting” in as little as 24 hours in a protected environment.
Classic Porsche Restoration will take you step by step through the dis-assembly process and reference photos of In- Progress Projects to help you understand what is going to happen to your Porsche project and why.
You can communicate with us by phone or email.
Using combinations of the latest techniques and processes or the old tried and true sheet metal shaping, the Craftsmen in The Metal Shop will use the most cost effective approach to return the metal body on your Porsche back to factory specifications. Undetectable from new.
Each Classic Porsche Restoration Metal Man is trained in not only the newest approaches of panel fitment and replacement such as Tig, Mig, and spot, welding. They are also trained in the old world process of fabricating a replacement panel from flat stock and leading the seams as Porsche did at the factory.
Using a hammer and a bag, English wheel, planishing hammer, or a power hammer, we can make every panel on every Porsche ever made and we can do it from scratch. Or we can appropriately replace body components with new panels using only Porsche approved processes.
Panel fitment and panel gaps are made factory perfect or better before the Porsche body leaves the metal shop.
In this shop equally skilled Craftsmen begin the painstaking and often tedious steps to make the Porsche body worthy of being refinished in new paint.
Many of the products or systems used in perfecting and preparing the body for final paint have changed over the years. All of them in our opinion, are improvements to the old products; They are more durable when properly applied. Most of the new products are not compatible with the older products originally used by Porsche. Consequently, the old products must be completely removed to bare metal.
Unlike the original factory finish, Classic Porsche Restoration uses several stages of paint preparation that were not used at the factory. Most of the stages require numerous applications and block sanding of primers and sealers. Sanding, with numerous grits of sand paper, insures that the entire process is in keeping with the Glasurit application guidelines, and produces a Perfect Mirror Show Finish.
Understanding the time and meticulous nature of the Paint Preparation process is essential when achieving a perfect finish. There are always shorts cuts that can be implemented in any paint preparation process. Here at Classic Porsche Restoration – We Take No Short Cuts. What our craftsmen do in this Shop is not an accident.
The endeavor of protection in the way of under coating, also takes place at this time. There are some very exciting new products that duplicate the look of the old Porsche coatings. And, they are much better at protection and durability.
This is where all the hard work and preparation pays off. A point at which the Porsche body goes through the “butterfly” phase, It is transformed from a gray entity to a thing of shear Beauty at the hands of the skilled Painters here at Classic Porsche Restoration.
Using exclusively Glasurit Paint, several coats of color and clear material are skillfully applied and lovingly wet sand and buffed to a perfect finish. A finished Porsche, able to exceed the expectations of the most discriminating show judge or the the thumbs up approval of other Porsche owners.
Each mechanical system is evaluated for it’s ability to function properly and safely on your revitalized Porsche. From, brakes, suspension, steering, and drive train, Classic Porsche Restoration has developed techniques and systems that restore your Porsche to a vehicle that not only performs well but is a great pleasure to drive.
The Mechanical Shop is a stand alone shop. The work done on your Porsche’s mechanical systems can be done with or without a body restoration. We are prepared to do as little or as much revitalization on the mechanical as you wish.
There are some things we won’t do. Please discuss your mechanical plans with us first.
It is the Classic Porsche Restoration process to have all re-used mechanical components powder coated or re- plated in factory finish.
This is the area where everything taken off your Porsche is put back on. We have highly skilled technicians, mechanics, and interior craftsmen who painstakingly re-assemble each and every part on your Porsche.
Over the years we have found that the owners of the Porsche entrusted to us for revitalization, find the assembly process exciting. Weekly progress photos help to contain enthusiasm while anticipating the completion of their Porsche. Quite by accident, we found that letting an owner help with the re-assembly of his Porsche, helped everyone to a better understanding and appreciation of what we do here. We encourage owner participation in the dis-assembly and assembly process.
To that end Classic Porsche Restoration has several avenues that we have created with local hotels and restaurants for owners and owners family’s to come and enjoy the Easton, Maryland area while visiting with their Porsche. Contact us for details.
